Flanders’ go-to platform for digital and media literacy

In 2021, Wieni teamed up with imec to develop mediawijs.be, the digital hub for Mediawijs, Flanders' Knowledge Centre for Digital & Media Literacy. Our goal: create a vibrant, user-friendly site that empowers everyone in Flanders and Brussels to use media and technology actively, critically, creatively and consciously.

Who is Mediawijs

Mediawijs is a government-funded initiative (through imec and the Flemish Minister of Media) that champions media literacy across Flanders and Brussels. Serving educators, parents, local authorities and vulnerable groups, Mediawijs creates tools, online training, campaigns, and guides to help all citizens participate securely and responsibly in the digital world.

How did Wieni help?

Mediawijs needed more than a website, they wanted a strategic platform that could evolve with their mission. From initial workshops to ongoing optimisation, Wieni helped deliver a curated digital workplace with tools, news, training and integration, all while ensuring effortless editorial control. We brought:

  • User-centred design rooted in workshops with staff and audiences

  • Flexible, block-based content system for publishing initiatives, events, and news

  • Powerful tagging infrastructure to automatically link related content across the site

  • Multilingual capabilities enabling targeted English and French content alongside Dutch

  • Integration with third-party tools such as Airtable for easy database management

  • Accessibility & SEO improvements to reach wider audiences and users with disabilities

Five highlights

  1. All initiatives under one roof
The platform unifies Mediawijs’ programmes, News in the Classroom, Mediacoach, The Scale of M, and more, into a coherent, easily navigable site.

  2. Block‑based content management
Editors can mix and match modular block layouts to build everything from event pages to campaign overviews while keeping consistency.

  3. Smart linking via tags
A robust tagging engine automatically connects news, tools, and events based on topic, creating a web of relevant content.

  4. Multilingual flexibility
Only translate what matters: content editors can publish selectively in English and French, without duplicating Dutch pages.

  5. External data integration
We connected tools like Airtable to feed databases directly into the site, ideal for showcasing up-to-date resource lists.

Thanks to this partnership, Mediawijs editors now manage a dynamic site that adapts with their mission. The result: improved accessibility for users, greater editorial autonomy, and stronger multilingual and data-handling capabilities, all of which reinforce Mediawijs' role as the leading voice in Flemish media literacy.
