KBF: a digital
base camp
for climbing and mountain sports

The Klim- en Bergsportfederatie brings disciplines, clubs, courses and news together on one platform for more than 16,000 members.

Wieni designed and built the new website of the Klim- en Bergsportfederatie (KBF) with DatoCMS and Next.js. Club and event data now come straight from KBF's Microsoft Dynamics CRM, a smart search helps visitors find their way, and a flexible set of content blocks lets the KBF team build pages on their own.

Who is KBF?

KBF is the Flemish federation for climbing and mountain sports. It represents more than 16,000 members and dozens of clubs across eleven disciplines, from sport climbing and bouldering to via ferrata, canyoning, skyrunning and ski touring. KBF organises courses and instructor training, insures its members, manages access to Belgian rock climbing areas and runs its own mountain hut in the Ardennes.

How did Wieni help?

KBF's old website had grown into a large collection of pages that was hard to navigate for members and hard to maintain for the team. Club information lived in the CRM, but had to be kept up to date on the website by hand. KBF asked for a new platform that would guide every type of visitor, from a first-time boulderer to a club secretary, to the right information.

Wieni took care of the information architecture, design, content modelling, development, CRM integration, content migration and hosting.

Five highlights

1. Building blocks with a manual

In DatoCMS, KBF's editors build pages from a library of content blocks, with templates for the homepage, news and discipline pages. A broad toolkit only works if people know how to combine it, so we wrote a practical guide with examples of how to build pages with those blocks. Editor and super-editor roles keep publishing under control, and the eleven discipline pages each get a hand-picked table of contents and clear calls to action.

2. Club data straight from the CRM

Club details are managed in one place: KBF's Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Through an API built with KBF's CRM partner, the website pulls in clubs, contact roles, disciplines and locations automatically. Visitors find a club on an interactive map, filter by discipline and land on a club page that combines CRM data with photos and stories added in DatoCMS. When a club changes its secretary, the website follows by itself.

3. An agenda that keeps itself up to date

Courses, workshops and events come from the same CRM. Editors can drop an event teaser on any page and filter it by discipline or club, so the sport climbing page automatically shows upcoming sport climbing courses. Availability labels show at a glance whether a course still has free spots.

4. Search that understands what people look for

Search sits front and centre on the homepage. We built it on Algolia and tuned the ranking together with KBF: general pages come before infobank articles and news, frequently used tools and external links show up as quick results, and someone typing "lid worden" lands on the membership page right away. The infobank is tagged per discipline, so every discipline page can surface its own relevant articles.

5. A new domain without losing the way

The new website moved to klimenbergsport.be, while member tools such as the member portal and registrations stay on the existing klimenbergsportfederatie.be domain. A page-by-page redirect plan keeps old links and search rankings working. Booking tools such as the Rock Reservation System for Belgian climbing areas and the Chaveehut are embedded as full-page experiences, with the right domain whitelisting and cookie handling to make them work smoothly.

The result

  • Easy to find: every discipline, course and club is a few clicks or one search away.

  • Always up to date: club and event data come straight from the CRM.

  • In control: KBF's team builds and publishes pages on its own, with a clear guide.

  • Ready to grow: new features such as climbing hall pages build on the same patterns.

We're proud to have built KBF's new base camp online, and look forward to the next climb together.

Let's work together!
