How do we manage different types of work?

We believe different types of work need different project management approaches.

We categorise our work in three types based on: 

  • volume of work 
  • complexity of work.

Based on the type, we define a set of communication and planning practices.

These are general guidelines and can be explicitly overruled when needed.

Characteristics:

  • Less than 16 hours of work (for 1 or more persons)
  • Low complexity

Communication:

  • Asynchronous in GitHub

Planning:

  • Via a GitHub project containing issues that the team self-assigns based on due date

🍏 Apples

Characteristics:

  • Between 16 hours and 2 weeks of work
  • Medium complexity

Communication:

  • Synchronous planning meeting with asynchronous preparation
  • Stand-up

Planning:

  • Via weekly Slack notification

🍍Pineapples

Characteristics:

  • More than 2 weeks of work
  • High complexity
  • Multiple scrum sprints

Communication:

  • Refinement
  • Sprint Planning
  • Stand-up
  • Review
  • Retrospective
